St. Francis Community Nursing Unit is a single-storey building which opened in 1976 as a welfare home.

As the dependency levels of the residents increased over the years, the unit became a residential centre for older people.

The centre initially had places for 22 residents.

In total there are 20 single rooms and six three-bedded rooms.

Residents have access to a large secure garden.
The building is wheelchair accessible with ramps to the front and rear entrance.
Parking for staff and visitors is to the front of the centre.

The centre is situated on the Newcastle Road beside Galway University.
It is within walking distance of Galway city centre and there is a bus stop opposite the main entrance.
