Raheen Community Hospital formally known as “Knocksolus”, “Hill of Light” was the residence of Dr. Edward A. McLysaght until 1921.

The hospital has forged deep and lasting links within the local community. Intergenerational art workshops between hospital residents, day centre attendees and local school children have been a huge success with displays of work in the hospital, in the library in scariff and some work was also displayed in the national museum.

Renowned local and worldwide musicians including Tommy Hayes and Kate Purcell have provided very entertaining musical workshops. They have also been involved with the Iniscealtra festival of arts with works displayed during the festival which received local and international acclaim.

They are currently involved with Cuimhneamh a Chlair, The Clare Oral History and Folklore group who are a voluntary agency committed to preserving the memories of County Clare’s past for the future.

This involves taking life histories from older people with the day centre and the hospital to preserve their oral literature, social customs and occupational folklore for future generations.

What is the Nursing Homes Support Scheme?

The Nursing Homes Support Scheme provides financial support towards the cost of long-term nursing home care. Under the scheme, people who need nursing home care have their income and assets assessed, and then make a contribution towards the cost of their care based on their assessment.

The HSE will pay the rest, if any, of the costs of their care in designated public and approved private nursing homes covered under the scheme. People can choose care in any of the nursing homes included in the scheme provided that the nursing home can cater for the person's particular needs and that it has a place available for the person.

As the budget for this scheme is fixed each year, at times a waiting list for financial support may be in place
