St. Finbarr's Hospital has a residential hospital facility on site which caters for older persons who require a high level of person centred nursing and medical care.

The services provided are at the centre for Gerontology developments in Cork and the hospital is progressive in the needs of the resident patients, of the wider community and has close linkages with Cork University Hospital and University College Cork.

Persons admitted to the hospital are of maximum nursing and medical needs dependency. Their care philosophy is to embrace positive ageing and person centred care.

The hospital functions as a hospital and is not a nursing home. The Hospital is also supported by the 'Friends of St. Finbarr's' voluntary groups who organise and fund raise on behalf of the resident patients to enhance their social lives and provide additional comforts and supports.

Their services are provided by experienced and qualified nursing staff, multi-disciplinary teams and Consultant Geriatrician lead medical teams.

St. Finbarr's is able to look after those resident patients at times when they become unwell and would normally require treatment in an acute hospital; offering Consultant medical care and expert nursing care to meet their acute and continued nursing / medical needs.

What is the Nursing Homes Support Scheme?

The Nursing Homes Support Scheme provides financial support towards the cost of long-term nursing home care. Under the scheme, people who need nursing home care have their income and assets assessed, and then make a contribution towards the cost of their care based on their assessment.

The HSE will pay the rest, if any, of the costs of their care in designated public and approved private nursing homes covered under the scheme. People can choose care in any of the nursing homes included in the scheme provided that the nursing home can cater for the person's particular needs and that it has a place available for the person.

As the budget for this scheme is fixed each year, at times a waiting list for financial support may be in place
